Hornets Outmuscle Rattlers
By Robert Doyen February 04, 2005
The San Marcos Rattlers pitted their physical style of play against the sharp passing of the East Central Hornets in a 1-0 defeat on Friday in their first District game.
“They did not look at their district opponents like they were just going to sit there and lie down,” said head coach Sean Dickson, “They are predicted to win district, but we know that we can go out on the field and challenge anybody.”
East Central out-shot the Rattlers 17-4 in the first half, but they were only able to score once when Jeremy Reinhard put the ball in the net on a scramble in front of the goal.
After the score the Rattlers upped their intensity level and the game became very physical. Juan Delmontes earned a yellow card for a rough play halfway through the period.
“We play good hard nosed defense,” said Dickson, “Sometimes it’s going to get quite aggressive out there and it’s going to look like cars crashing up against each other. That’s just the style of play out there.”
The second half got even more brutal. The Rattlers earned two more yellow cards in the period and the Hornets’ Roberto Pedraza received a red card for starting a fight after a vicious slide tackle against him.
San Marcos once again lost the battle of shots on goal to East Central in the second half, but the Rattlers’ shots were much closer this time as Rene Marabilla came within inches of tying the game on four near misses. Marabilla played his first game of the season on Friday.
SMHS’ next opponent is rival Seguin.
“A lot of our kids have played against these guys since they were young,” said Dickson, “You have two cities in close proximity to each other--they’re going to naturally build a rivalry.”
The game starts at ? on such and such particular day in Seguin.
