Rams Use Size and Experience to Beat Bears
By Robert Doyen January 07, 2005
The court savvy Hill Country Christian School held the inexperienced San Marcos Baptist Academy to one field goal in the first quarter en route to a dominating 90-39 victory on Friday.
The Bears' first basket against the Rams was a three pointer with 20 seconds remaining in the first period by their leading scorer this season, Korda Hill .
SMBA was held to zero field goals in the first half while HCCS's 6'9" center, Justin Neuhaus, was on the court. The Rams also field 6'6" Jeremy Bowman and Robby Vance in the starting lineup. The towering trio combined for 58 points and 32 rebounds. Bowman nearly had a triple double with 17 points 9 rebounds and 9 assists.
"Our big guys match up real well against everybody," said HCCS coach Sam Lunz, "Some teams may have one or two guys who are big, but nobody has three who are as big as we have."
"They're a very good team," said SMBA coach Jason Cambell, "Very tall. Very very tall. It's hard to get shots."
The Bears had some trouble tonight because they have so many new players since last year.
"We're still developing...still at a point where we can get better," said coach Cambell, "I think we have maybe three people that returned this year out of nine. You re-teach every year (at SMBA)."
The Rams used a 31-4 run in the first quarter, highlighted by an alleyoop slam dunk from Bowman to Neuhaus, to blow the game open for the rest of the night.
"They get up on you 14-1, you get discouraged," said SMBA coach Jason Cambell, "You come out and play hard from the jump and it's a completely different ball game. We've been in every other game we've played with people that are even just a little bit taller than us. This big is pretty difficult for us to get around."
The third quarter was a repeat of the first as the Rams held the Bears to two field goals in the last two minutes of the stanza and outscored them 26-5 with a barrage of dunks and layups on fast breaks. HCCS took an insurmountable 80-17 lead into the final period.
The Bears outscored the Rams' second stringers 22-10 in the fourth quarter to make the final score a bit closer. SMBA was led by Austin Mellon with eight points and Korda Hill and Marco Guttierrez with seven. In the Bears' previous contest Guttierrez broke the SMBA record for three pointers in a game with 10.
The Bears are now 5-4, and the Rams are 15-5. Both teams plan to make the playoffs in their divisions this year.
