Lehman Ends Season with Loss to Vista Ridge
By Robert Doyen November 09, 2004
Lehman lost it's final game of the season 42-14 to Vista Ridge last Thursday. Although they had played this team closely in their first meeting and were coming off the momentum of ending their losing streak with a tie against Westlake, they lost a lot of players due to grades and were unable to find cohesion throughout the contest.
Quarterback Thomas Kellner also had some trouble offensively. He suffered a mild concussion against Westlake and was still shaken up a bit against the Rangers.
"It took him a few days to get his bearings back, and he was still having a little bit of trouble on Thursday," said Caoch Steve Davis.
The defense had trouble getting going in this game, but Jason Vavre and Donnovick Green ran the ball well for the Lobos.
The score could have been closer, but the Lobos dropped two passes that would have led to touchdowns and the Rangers ran back a kickoff for a touchdown.
With the last game over, Coach Davis reflected upon the first season ever of Lehman Lobos football.
The Sophomore team finished with a 1-8-1 record, and the freshman team finished at 5-4-1.
"The Sophomore team was kind of a roller coaster this year. The Freshman team was a lot more consistent playing hard game in and game out. One of the things the Sophmores need to work on is getting a level of consistency."
"When those two groups combine together next year I think we're going to have a strong team," said Davis. "I think being able to work with them on learning the system better and having a tough boot camp type offseason, combined with having enough players so that nobody has to play both ways will help a lot."
Davis feels that his greatest asset going into next season is the caliber of acheivers he has on his young team.
"I think we have the type of kids that want to excel and do good," said coach Davis, "These kids are smart. They rise to the level of expectations you have for them. The Fresman team's record up until last year was 1-18 so after this season so they're upbeat about what they did this year, and if they continue working hard they'll get better."
One thing Davis wishes his team would do in the offseason is watch more football.
"When I was in school I watched games all the time. A lot of our kids don't watch a lot of football on TV which kind of surprises me, although they do play video football. They just need to learn the game."
On the season two players stood out as offensive and defensive stars.
"I'd say if you had to pick a player that had the greatest impact it would be Donnovick Green. He's a gifted athlete. We need to develop those leaders to step up, pull everyone else along and mature a little bit and everything will be fine," said Davis, "On defense our Safety Joseph Torez made a lot of big hits in the secondary. He was the hardest hitting kid on defense."
Overall Davis is optimistic about next season.
"We just need to work on getting bigger, faster, stronger and combining those two groups together and we'll have a strong team".
