Bulldogs Beat Lobos

By Robert Doyen October 21, 2004

The Lobos allowed too many big plays to stop the Bowie Bulldogs on Thursday and lost 34-16. If no touchdown were allowed from over thirty yards out the game would have ended in a tie, but mental mistakes are costing Lehman big this season.

Coach Steve Davis cited his players' lack of experience as a reason for the loss, but is growing weary of the excuse and wants to work harder with his team on the fundamentals of the game.

"We need to reverse this trend," said Coach Davis, "They still need to learn basic things like tackling and catching. We have a lot of work to do."

On the up side, Donnovick Green has consistently improved this season and is becoming a true force on the team. He finished with 115 yards rushing and 134 total yards.

"Green is really coming on right now," said Davis, "We're really happy with him."

The Lobos started off the contest trying to work on their passing game, but Thomas Kellner was never able to get a pass off and the Lobos turned the ball over on downs.

On the ensuing drive Bowie got the scoring started with a 31 yard touchdown pass to a wide open receiver after a series of running plays.

Upon receiving the ball on the kickoff, the Lobos once again tried to get something going in the air, but three incomplete passes in a row sent the Lehman kicking team back onto the field.

On the first play of their next possession the Bulldogs ran the ball in for a 44 yard Touchdown, and Bowie was up 13-0 going into the second quarter.

The Lobos started off the quarter looking very strong. They went predominantly to the run, and the drive lasted for12 plays and 66 yards. But they turned it over on downs at the 40 yard line when they couldn't convert a fourth and eight.

The Bulldogs then used runs of 30 and 45 yards to score another touchdown after two plays.

When the Lobos received the ball on offense again, Donnovick Green single-handedly took over the game to try and get his team back into it. On this drive every play went to him. He had seven rushes for 49 yards to get them into the red zone for the first time in the game. Then Thomas Kellner hit Green up the middle for a 20 yard touchdown pass. Donnovick then ran in the two point conversion to make the score 8-21. This was the best offensive series of the entire season so far for the Lobos.

Lehman could not capitalize on that momentum. The Bulldogs scored on a 30 yard touchdown run on their first series of the second half.

When the Lobos took over they started off strong with Green running the ball well again. But two holding penalties in a row brought the ball way back for a second and twenty-four, and Lehman couldn’t get the first down.

Bowie got the ball back on downs and marched back up the field for an impressive drive that was capped by a diving touchdown from four yards out to bring the score to 34-8.

The Lobos couldn’t get anything going on their next drive, and when the Bulldogs got the ball back they once again got the ball into the Lobos red zone. But then penalties pushed them way back, and on a pass play Chase Easley stripped the ball from the Bowie receiver and ran the ball back 75 yards for a touchdown with 22 seconds to go. Nate Rodriguez caught a pass to nail the two point conversion and the Lobos were down 16-34.

The Lobos’ onside kick was recovered by Bowie, and they took a knee to end the game.

Lehman’s next game is Thursday, October 28th at Westlake at 5:30.
