Lobos Lose to Undefeated Rattlers

By Robert Doyen October 15, 2004

The San Marcos Rattlers junior varsity used a relentless running attack to defeat the Lehman Lobos decisively on Thursday 30-6.

The Rattlers are such a running intensive team that they line up without any receivers. They pack the line of scrimmage and run straight at their opponent for the entire game.

Lehman scored the first touchdown of the night and appeared to be in control of the contest early on, but they soon lost the lead and never regained their confidence.

"When things start going wrong you've got to learn how to fight through it," said coach Steve Davis, "We haven't done that yet".

Neither team could gain any momentum in the first quarter until Lehman's second possession when the Lobos marched down the field for an 85 yard drive. Donnovick Green has improved much since the beginning of the season and gained 46 yards on the drive on some impressive runs. And then, on the second play of quarter number two, the Lobos went for it on fourth and eight and came up big. Kellner hit Anthony Crumley for a 17 yard touchdown pass and a missed two point conversion put the Lobos up 6-0.

Lehman kept San Marcos from getting a first down on their next drive and the team was playing with confidence, but then tragedy struck.

On the Lobos' next possession the Rattlers blocked a punt and took over at the Lehman ten yard line. San Marcos' Sean Rodriquez ran the ball in for a touchdown and the Rattlers converted their two point conversion to go up 8- 6.

The Lobos couldn't get a first down on their next possession and had to punt. The Rattlers wasted no time as quarterback Isaac Rodriguez connected with Matt Meserve on his first and only pass of the night for a 67 yard touchdown play. A two point conversion later and San Marcos was up 16-6 going into the half.

The Rattlers started off the second half with a crushing drive. They methodically pounded the ball up the middle on possession after possession. few of their runs went for big yardage, but they always managed to get a first down. Then after ten plays Michael Dominquez ran the ball in for a touchdown. The Rattlers made another two point conversion off of a fake kick to bring the score to 24-6.

On the ensuing kickoff San Marcos regained possession of the ball on the Lehman 35 yard line when they recovered the kickoff after no Lobo got to it in time... a trick often used by the Hays Rebels' coach Bob Shelton. The Rattlers ran the ball back up the field and scored another touchdown on a quarterback sneak. A missed extra point brought the score to 30-6.

The Lobos tried to get their passing game going to get back into the game, but early in the fourth quarter the Rattlers wrestled the ball out of Crumley's hands on a long pass play for an interception. San Marcos spent the next fourteen plays and the rest of the game running out the clock on running plays up the middle of the Lobos defense.

Lehman's next game is Thursday October 21st at 7:00 against Bowie at Bob Shelton Stadium.
