Lobos Lose Close One to Vista Ridge, Prepare for Rattlers

By Robert Doyen October 06, 2004

Lehman held Vista Ridge to a 0-0 tie going into the fourth quarter of last Thursday's game, but untimely mistakes cost them a 14-0 loss.

"Our defense played a very good ball game," said Coach Steve Davis, "but on offense we did not execute our plays".

In the third quarter it looked like the Lobos had an opportunity to take the lead when, with the score still knotted at zero, they recovered a fumble on the Vista Ridge ten yard line. But three illegal procedure penalties and one holding penalty pushed them all the way back to the 35 yard line and they were unable to get any points on the possession.

That coupled with a dropped pass in the endzone kept Lehman scoreless, and Vista Ridge scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure their victory.

Donovick Green ran the ball well for the Lobos. He gained about 75 yards on some good runs. Quarterback Thomas Kellner, under extreme pressure throughout the game, had some trouble and miscued on a few passes. The rest of the team never came together enough offensively to put together a complete drive.

The Lobos' next game is against the San Marcos Rattlers junior varsity.

"They're always a strong team," said Coach Davis, "They're well coached and very disciplined".

Davis is going into this game against his new rival with the same confidence he would against any other team.

"You prepare for each game the same way. There'll be a few different adjustments we'll make, but basically it's just a matter of getting better at what we've been working on".

Despite the slow start, Davis is very optimistic about the future of his program at Lehman High School.

"The Freshman are doing great. They're 4-2 and they're getting stronger," Said Davis, "The Sophomores are playing well. We just need to get more consistency and execute our offense. I think our defense is coming around. The offense will too, it just takes a little longer with the offense to get it implemented and learned."

There are four games left in the season and Davis is looking forward to the challenge.

"I know our kids will work hard and finish up strong. We're getting better and better each week, we just need to keep on improving".

"These two groups eventually will blend together and form our first varsity team. The future looks bright. If we keep working hard we'll get bigger, faster and stronger. We'll learn our plays and get better".

The Lobos have a bye in their schedule this week and do not play. Their next game is Thursday, October 14th at home against the San Marcos Rattlers at 7:00.
