Fredericksburg Overpowers Lehman

By Robert Doyen September 23, 2004

The Fredericksburg Battlin' Billies junior varsity used superior size and a powerful running game to defeat the Lobos on Thursday. Lehman was shut out for the first time this season 33-0.

Due to the size of the Billies offensive line, Lehman's defensive linemen employed a crawling technique.

"We try to hold the line of scrimmage by staying low in order to let the linebackers get tackles," said coach Steve Davis.

The technique worked well to keep the Lobos linemen from getting pushed backwards by Fredericksburg, but would sometimes take the defensive line completely out of the play as the Billies' linemen smothered them to the ground. This is the same defensive strategy employed by Westlake, and the new defensive line coach for Lehman came from that school.

The Billies got on the scoreboard quick. On their first series of downs Lehman went for a punt on fourth down, but kicker Joseph Torrez fumbled the snap and Fredericksburg took over on the 33 yard line. Two plays later Shaun Pyka ran the ball up the left sideline for the first Billies touchdown. A missed extra point made the score 6-0.

The two teams held each other without a first down for the next two posessions. Then the Lobos caught a punt at their own 21 yard line and began a drive up the field. Donovick Green picked up significant yardage every time he ran the ball. Kellner passed and ran the ball with confidence. The Lobos converted on a fourth and one, and after that picked up good yardage on each play.

Then Kellner threw a pass twenty yards downfield to Thomas Martell who caught the ball for a twenty yard gain at the Billies' 40 yard line. Unfortunately a penalty on the offenseive line nullified the catch and moved the ball back ten yards making it third and fourteen. The Lobos never quite recovered from this blow.

The second quarter began with Fredericksburg starting a drive at their own 40 yard line. This drive hilighted the Billies running game with running back Melcher Rockwood gaining 15 yards on three carries and quarterback Austin Fay gaining 35 yards on two carries including a 33 yard run that led to a first and goal at the Lobos five yard line. But Fredericksburg lost five yards on a fumble and five yards on a penalty, and when they went for it on 4th and 15 the Lobos held them and got the ball back deep in their own territory.

They were unable to get a first down and punted the ball back to the Billies, and on the third play of the ensuing drive Fredericksburg's Rockwood ran the ball into the endzone from 28 yards out. A missed two point conversion made the score 12-0.

Lehman returned Fredericksburgs kickoff to the 46 yard line. They went to a passing game to try to get back into the game, but Kellner threw an interception with 1:42 to play, and the Billies took over on their own 45. Fay gained 26 yards on two carries during this drive but then Xavier Zamarrippa intercepted a pass and the Lobos got the ball back. They only had time for two plays before the half ended.

The third quarter began with a run back for a touchdown on the kickoff by Fredericksburg's David Perez. It was called back due to a penalty, but five plays later Perez redeemed himself by catching a 20 yard pass for a touchdown. Fay ran in the two point conversion to bring the score to 20-0.

The next series for Lehman ended with a fumble, and the Billies took over at midfield. Fredericksburg ran right over the top of the smaller Lobos on this drive and Fay ran in another touchdown from one yard out. The extra point brought the score to 27-0.

On the first play of the Lobos' next posession Kellner threw an interception and the Billies took over with very little time remaining. They didn't need much time though. On their second play Melcher Rockwood ran for a 40 yard touchdown as time expired in the quarter.

The Lobos blocked the extra point and were now down by 33.

The Lobos performed well on their next possession. With the game out of reach Fredericksburg put in their second team. Kellner went to work on them from the shotgun going three for four passing and running for five yards. Then the Billies, not wanting Lehman to score against them, sent their A team back in to stop the drive. The Lobos missed a first down by three yards on a fourth down run by Kellner and the Billies got the ball back.

The Lobos held them to four downs, but after recieving the punt the Fredericksburg defense kept them from making any plays until the clock ran out leaving the final score at 33-0.

The Lobos' next game is on Thursday at 6:00 against Vista Ridge at home.
