First Game of New Rivalry Won By Rebels

By Robert Doyen September 16, 2004

In the first game ever for the Lobos with "rivalry" implications, they were defeated by the Hays
Rebels junior varsity 22-7.

Many of the players on the fledgeling Lehman football team are transfer students from
Hays High School. This provided an intense undertone to the game in which the Lobos were
determined to defeat their former schoolmates.

The Hays County Rebels used ball control offense and an opportunistic defense to take
that dream from the Lobos who were once again plagued by untimely turnovers and defensive
lapses. If not for those turnovers, the game would have been much closer.

"Hays has been running those plays for a while now," said coach Davis, "We're just
getting started learning them."

Lehman actually capitalized first on a turnover when they recovered a fumble at the
Rebels 30 yard line. Kellner ran the ball in from the three yard line to put the Lobos up 7-0.

But then, on the very next series for Hays, Darryl Brown ran the ball up the field for a
70 yard touchdown. Hays did not convert the extra point and the first quarter ended with the
Lobos up 7-6.

In the second quarter the Lobos fumbled a snap, turning over the ball to the Rebels.
Brown had another great drive, and Brooks Pinkard sealed the deal with a quarterback sneak
from two yards out. Shane Santiago caught the ball in the endzone for a two point conversion to
put the Rebels up 14-7 going into the half.

The third quarter began with a kickoff to the Rebels. This began a drive for Hays that
lasted for fourteen plays and eight and a half minutes. The Rebels continuously ran the ball up
the middle, wearing out the Lobos' defensive linemen.

But then, when it seemed as though the drive would go on forever, Johnny Ray Gomez
tackled Darryl Brown on a Fourth down play at the Lobos 30 yard line. The Lobos took over
on downs and began to work their way up the field.

Donovick Green ran 22 yards up the middle of the field to start the fourth quarter.
But then, similar to last week's fourth quarter, mistakes destroyed the momentum of a promising
drive for the Lobos. Green bobbled a pitch and lost seven yards, and then Kellner threw a
bomb downfield that was picked off by the Rebels.

Four plays later Hays Quarterback Brooks Pinckard threw a sidearm pass to Shane
DeSantiago for a 53 yard touchdown. A two point conversion pass to Chris Garza put the
Rebels up 22-7.

The Lobos returned a short kickoff to their own 45 yard line, and from there they tried
to mount a comeback, putting together an eleven play drive deep into Hays territory. Kellner
scrambled eight yards for a first down on a fourth down play, and Green ran hard during the
drive for 15 yards on three carries. But then on the second fourth down conversion attempt of
the drive Michael Rocha of Hays saved what could have been a touchdown when he made a
solo tackle on Thomas Martell who caught a pass on a well designed screen play.

Hays then took over at the 17 yard line and ran the ball up the field until the clock
expired and they defeated the Lobos 22-7.

Despite the loss, it was apparent that the Lobos have improved quite a bit since the
beginning of the season.

"I'm proud of the Sophomores," said head coach Steve Davis, "We'll keep learning our
assignments and getting better."

The next game for the Lobos is Thursday at 5:30 against Fredericksburg at home.
