Panthers Pounce Lobos
By Robert Doyen September 10, 2004
On Friday the Hyde Park Baptist varsity humbled the Lehman Lobos junior varsity,
defeating them 47-12.
The Lobos were comming off of a dominating victory against Comfort, but turned the
ball over six times and allowed too many big plays to defeat the well seasoned Panthers.
"It was sophmores versus seniors tonight," said Coach Davis concerning the loss.
Not only were the Lobos facing older and larger players, but also a very good team in
general. Hyde Park made it all the way to the quarterfinal round of the 3-A State Championship
last year where they were defeated by the eventual state Champion. Also, their quarterback and
number one running back took first place in the 3-A State 4x400 meter relay Championship.
That speed won them the game. The Lobos did a good job all night long of containing
runs up the middle, but once any of the speedy Panther players was able to turn the corner,
there was no Lobo fast enough to catch him. Half of their offensive touchdowns came between
one and four plays into their drives on a huge run or pass.
While you can't coach speed, you can coach determination. As the game wore on
Lehman slowly grew more poised.
Halfway through the third quarter the Lobos started to figure out how to hold Hyde
Park on defense. They stopped the Panthers twice near the goal line. On the first of the two
drives Anthony Crumley recovered a fumble after a quarterback draw at the 20 yard line. On
the second and most impressive defensive series, Hyde Park had a first down at the Lobos' five
yard line. On the first play they stuffed the running back for a two yard gain. Josh Lewis sacked
the quarterback for an eight yard loss on the next play, and Chase Easley tipped a pass to save
a touchdown on third down. The Panthers then missed their field goal attempt.
Then at the end of the third quarter the Lobos put together an impressive drive right
after Offensive Lineman Hector Hernandez was injured on a kickoff return. Running back
Johnny Ray Gomez came alive during this drive gaining 37 yards on two carries, helping the
Lobos to get into the red zone for the first time. Unfortunately on the very next play to begin the
fourth quarter Thomas Kellner threw an interception that was returned 84 yards for a
touchdown.
That was pretty much the story of the night. The Lobos would gain momentum only to
crush themselves with turnovers that resulted in touchdowns.
On the ensuing kickoff Anthony Crumley altered that pattern by returning the ball 80
yards up the right sideline of the field for the Lobos' first touchdown of the game, giving Lehman
a big boost in confidence that carried them through to the end.
With the game already out of hand, Hyde Park sent in most of its second stringers in the
fourth quarter. This evened out the lopsided competition of the Lobos' junior varsity playing the
Panthers' varsity, and from then on out Lehman dominated the game.
After Lehman recovered a fumble on a punt at the 44 yard line, Johnny Ray Gomez ran
hard up the field again gaining 18 yards on three carries. Then on a fouth down play with one
yard to go the Lobos went for a quarterback sneak which resulted in a 24 yard touchdown run
for Thomas Kellner. An unsuccessful two point conversion brought the game to it's final score
of 47-12.
The next game for the Lobos is on Thursday September 16th against Hays.
