Lobos Defeat Bobcats in Home Opener

By Robert Doyen September 02, 2004

The Lehman Lobos got their first win of the year on Thursday against the Comfort Bobcats
J.V. at Bob Shelton Stadium. The 20-0 victory was also the new school's first ever home game.

Lehman can field a squad no higher than the J.V. level because they are a new High
School and only have Freshmen and Sophomores available to play. Because of this, they are
also not in a district yet, so coach Steve Davis must ask teams to play his squad.

Last week they played the Schertz-Clemens Buffalos J.V. The Buffalos beat the Lobos
decisively, winning 39-8, but the game was closer than the score. Seven unforced Lehman
turnovers hurt them badly. Ultimately the game ended as expected, with the more experienced
squad exploiting the mistakes of the brand new team.

This week they drew the J.V. of the Comfort Bobcats. Comfort is a much smaller
school than Schertz-Clemens, and the Lobos scored easily against them in the first half.

"I felt kind of bad because they only had about 15 players," said offensive lineman Paul
Rocha, "but I thought we played a good game."

Joseph Torrez set up the first touchdown of the game with an interception in the opening
quarter. This led to an 18 yard scoring run by Donovic Green, capped by a two point
conversion.

Quarterback Thomas Kellner opened up the game for Lehman in the second quarter
with deadly passing. He hit Thomas Martel for a 9 yard touchdown reception, and threw a pass
on a screen play to Jason Vavra that resulted in a 27 yard TD run. Both two point conversions
were missed.

Kellner finished 5 for 10, gaining 96 yards in the air and two touchdowns.

The defense didn't let down in the second quarter either as Anthony Crumbly grabbed
another interception for the Lobos.

The second half proved to be much more challenging for the Lobos, who were unable
to score again, but their defense still held Comfort scoreless, resulting in the final score of 20-0.

Coach Davis was proud of his team's effort.
"
The Kids played hard," said Davis, "We're young and we're starting to learn the tempo
of High School Football."

The Lehman Freshmen were also victorious, defeating the Austin Aikins Eagles
Freshman team 32-6.

Lehman High School's next game is on Friday, September 10th against The High Park
Baptist Varsity team.

In two years Lehman football will be eligible to field a Varsity team and compete in
District play.
