San Marcos Baptist Academy Still Fine Tuning after Second Scrimmage

By Robert Doyen August 19, 2004

The inexperienced SMBA Bears performed valiantly on Thursday against 19th ranked
Centerpoint.

"We did a lot better than we did against Lakey," said coach Tim Georg, whose team features, "probably four our five athletes who have never played a down of football."

In the end the JV squad wound up losing three to zero, and the Varsity fell by a score of
one to five.

For those of you not in the know, in a High School Football scrimmage each team starts at the thirty yard line and gets a total of between ten and twenty downs to score as often as they
can. Each touchdown counts as one point and the special teams do not play.

In the Varsity portion of the scrimmage SMBA started off with a lot of energy. Their passing game looked sharp, featuring a leaping grab that started a drive down the field.

Running back Bobby Alter continued the drive with gritty running up the middle of the field and a twelve yard scramble after a broken play down the left sideline

The Bears struck the scoreboard first three plays later on a pass by 6'4"
quarterback Kyle Sowell who hit Brad Christmas in the end-zone for a 34 yard touchdown
play.

On the very next play the Bears tried another bomb up the field that fell incomplete. In response Centerpoint upped the defensive pressure and started rushing the quarterback,
sacking Sowell twice in the next five plays to end SMBA's 20 plays.

The players on these small school teams must play both offense and defense, so when Centerpoint took over on offense the players merely switched sides of the field and went back after each other.

Centerpoint wasted no time, running the ball into the end-zone from 67 yards out on their second play, and they didn't let up after that, exposing the Bears' weakness on defense.

They picked up yards in bunches on quarterback sneaks and well timed option plays. After only eleven downs they were up 3-1, and they scored another touchdown after nineteen plays. Then on their last series of plays Cordese Hill barely saved a touchdown, tackling a Centerpoint receiver after a gain of 67 at the three yard line. SMBA then dug in and held them out of the end-zone in a goal-line stand that resulted in one stuff for a loss of a yard up the middle and a fumble recovery after a quarterback draw.

The next two series of downs between the Varsity Squads became intense defensively.
Centerpoint rushed the quarterback relentlessly resulting in three sacks and a zero for five passing performance by Sowell. The running game was also shut down as the Bears gained
only one first down in their set of fifteen plays.

SMBA responded by upping their intensity level on defense as well and allowed only one more touchdown before the end of the game.

"We're going to spend a lot more time on tackling," said coach Georg about his team's performance on defense.

In the most endearing moment of the game Coach Georg actually grabbed his players on the field and put them in proper defensive position before a Centerpoint snap.

He's spending most of his time just trying to get them to learn to play as a team.

"It's all new to them", said coach Georg, "These kids come from all over the place, and
it's hard to make a team in seven days."

Tim Georg is the former coach of the San Marcos Rattlers. When asked about the transition to coaching at a small school where the players must play both ways on the field, he said, "You can't be as complex with your offense, but the intensity's still there. It's still fun."

The JV had a little more Trouble than the Varsity on offense and defense, but there were a few bright spots for them. Toby Kieth ran up the sideline for 25 yards on a broken play, and Tommy James had a big game on defense recording a sack and many tackles. He also ran the ball well when given a chance. But overall the youth and inexperience of the JV shined through as they had trouble finishing their tackles and receiving snaps at the line of scrimmage.

Despite the loss Coach Georg is excited about his team this season. Although they
committed many errors due to lack of experience, they still played hard.

"They gave me an effort," said Georg, "You can't coach effort."
