Tony Parker Will Eat Yellow Pain...t
By Robert Doyen May 05, 2004
Tony Parker will sink his young teeth into the yellow paint on the Laker’s home court this afternoon. You can believe that. You can take that to court.
Even the media wants it. And Shaq and Kobe agree.
“Yea”, “yea”, says Shaq, on whether or not parker should get bullied-- with a mischievous look in his eye. And Kobe believes in hard fouls, but not unnecessary fouls. As a spurs fan, and therefore a classy guy, I will not comment on how that statement effects the legal defense in his Colorado case. But I do think it will effect the game. Look for a hard foul early on against Tony. A foul that will have you jumping out of your lazy boy and flinging your remote control at the television. A foul that will leave you wondering why Karl Malone has never had criminal charges pressed against him.
And you know what…. That isn’t such a bad idea at all. Who does Tony have the most trouble with in the entire NBA? Stephon Marbury. He’s big, fast, strong and aggressive. Honestly, if Phil Jackson would just release his stranglehold on Gary Payton, the Lakers would be much more even with the Spurs in this series. Not that Gary can guard… well… anybody anymore. I’ve even heard him described as “The Orange Cone” instead of “The Glove” recently. But if Gary posts up Tony and bumps him a lot on offense, he can psych him out.
It’s not gonna happen though. Phil Jackson is in love with the triangle offense, to the detriment of his team. Michael Jordan is still in his brain. He wants his stars to star. Gary Payton is lost in Phil’s offense. Look for a barrage of gum flapping technical fouls from Gary in the Spurs’ clinching game.
And it doesn’t matter. At the level Tony is playing at, a fierce blow will only reinforce his will and determination. Behold a new NBA superstar.
Next year, after the disappointment of the 2004 NBA playoffs, the Lakers will be reduced to an ailing Shaq and a bunch of underpaid and overhyped role players. Bye bye dynasty.
Meanwhile, the spurs will be quietly building their new 2005 title contender during this off season. Probably after winning this year’s O’Brien trophy.
And if Tony Parker stands up tall and makes his next shot after the inevitable Lakers dog pile he must be expecting on Sunday, he will be standing on the stilts of the basketball Gods.
